1. Stop Looking for the “Perfect” Opening
One of the biggest mistakes people make is believing they need an amazing pickup line or a clever first message.
You don’t.
A simple “Hey, how’s your day going?” can work much better than something overly rehearsed.
The goal isn’t to impress them in the first ten seconds. The goal is simply to open the door to a conversation.
2. Start With Something You Already Have in Common
The easiest conversations usually come from your surroundings.
If you’re classmates, talk about class. If you work together, mention something happening at work. If you both like the same show, music, sport, game, or hobby, use that.
For example:
“Did you watch the new episode yet?”
“I heard you like that band. What’s your favorite song?”
“Are you going to the event this weekend?”
These questions don’t feel forced because there’s already a reason for asking them.
3. Ask Questions That Give Them Something to Work With
Avoid questions that can be answered with just “yes” or “no.”
Instead of:
“Do you like movies?”
Try:
“What’s the last movie you watched that you actually loved?”
Instead of:
“Do you like music?”
Try:
“What kind of music do you usually listen to?”
Open-ended questions make it easier for the conversation to continue.
4. Don’t Turn It Into an Interview
There’s a difference between being interested and interrogating someone.
If you ask question after question without sharing anything about yourself, the conversation can start feeling like an interview.
Try using the question + reaction + share approach.
For example:
You: “What kind of music do you listen to?”
Them: “Mostly indie and pop.”
You: “Same, actually. I’ve been listening to a lot of indie music lately. Have you heard ___?”
Now you’ve given them something to respond to instead of immediately asking another question.
5. Use Their Energy
Pay attention to how they respond.
If they’re giving detailed answers, asking you questions back, smiling, or actively keeping the conversation going, that’s a good sign that they’re comfortable talking to you.
If their responses are consistently one-word answers and they don’t seem interested in continuing, don’t force it.
Confidence isn’t about refusing to take a hint.
Sometimes the most confident thing you can do is give someone space.
6. Don’t Try to Hide That You Like Them
You don’t have to confess your feelings immediately.
But you also don’t need to pretend you’re completely uninterested.
Compliment them. Remember something they told you. Ask about something they’re interested in. Show genuine curiosity.
People generally respond better to someone who seems comfortable being interested in them than someone desperately trying to appear “too cool to care.”
7. If You’re Texting Them, Keep It Simple
You don’t need to send a paragraph.
A message connected to something you already know about them is usually a much easier starting point.
For example:
“Hey, did you ever finish that show you were talking about?”
Or:
“Okay, I need your opinion on something…”
Or simply:
“Hey! How’s your week going?”
The conversation doesn’t need to begin with fireworks.
It just needs to begin.
8. Let the Conversation Develop Naturally
Once you’ve started talking, don’t obsess over where it’s going.
You don’t need to immediately turn the conversation into flirting, ask them out, or figure out whether they like you back.
Get to know them.
Make jokes. Talk about random things. Share stories. Find out what you have in common.
The more comfortable you become talking to each other, the easier everything else becomes.
9. Remember: They’re Probably Nervous Too
Here’s something worth remembering:
Your crush is a person, not a test you have to pass.
You don’t need to say everything perfectly. You will probably stumble over your words occasionally. There may be an awkward silence. You might send a message that doesn’t get the response you hoped for.
That’s okay.
Starting a conversation isn’t about guaranteeing that someone will like you.
It’s about giving the two of you a chance to find out whether you actually enjoy talking to each other.
