I’m not sure exactly how old she is, but I initially thought she was around 33 or 34.
Lately, I’ve noticed a few interactions that have made me wonder whether there’s a genuine connection between us, or whether I’m simply reading too much into normal workplace behavior.
One thing I’ve noticed is that we seem to make eye contact frequently. Whenever she walks past my desk, we often notice each other, even in a room full of people. Most of the time she smiles when we make eye contact.
A while ago, I asked her for help with a work assignment. She came over to my desk to explain it, even though she probably could have answered the question from her own computer. She stayed for a short conversation afterward, which stood out to me.
She also has a playful sense of humor. When I ask work-related questions, she sometimes jokes with me or teases me lightly. Our conversations are usually friendly and relaxed.
What makes it confusing is that our interactions have felt inconsistent. Some days we talk easily and everything feels comfortable, while other days we barely interact. I’ve even tried to keep my distance at times because I don’t want to make things awkward, especially since we work together.
I remember that when I first started at the company, there were a few moments when I looked away after making eye contact and noticed she was still looking in my direction. She also seemed to speak to me in a particularly friendly tone, although that could simply be her personality.
Now that we’ve been interacting more often, I’m wondering whether it would be appropriate to ask her to grab coffee outside of work, or whether it’s better to leave things as they are. Because we’re coworkers, I want to be respectful and avoid creating an uncomfortable situation.
I’m also trying to be realistic and consider the possibility that I’m interpreting ordinary kindness as something more.
One update: I recently found out she’s actually 36, which made me wonder if I’m overthinking the whole situation. I’m not sure whether the age difference matters, but it has definitely made me second-guess my assumptions.
What do you think? Am I reading too much into these interactions, or is it reasonable to think there could be a mutual connection?
