If I want to become a millionaire, where do I start?

Here’s a fresh paraphrased version that keeps the core message while using new wording and structure.

How I Built Wealth After Starting Over With Almost Nothing

In 2006, I moved to the United States with only a few hundred dollars to my name. Before leaving the United Kingdom, I sold my house and most of my belongings to begin a completely new chapter in California.

Starting from scratch meant relying on the skills I’d developed over the previous 45 years while working minimum-wage jobs to support myself.

Fast forward to today, and my net worth has grown into six figures. If things continue on the same path, reaching a $1 million net worth is a realistic goal within the next few years.

The biggest lesson I learned was to start small.

Building wealth doesn’t happen overnight. It begins with earning the first dollar, then turning that into ten, then one hundred, and continuing to grow from there. The goal is to create steady cash flow that can be repeated and expanded.

I looked at the skills I already had instead of waiting for the perfect opportunity. Having experience in retail, I discovered people were making money selling used books on Amazon. I bought inexpensive books from thrift stores, library sales, and garage sales, then spent evenings listing them online. As the business grew, I began using Amazon’s fulfillment service to handle shipping.

Every dollar I earned went straight back into buying more inventory, allowing the business to grow over time.

I also used hobbies to generate income. Since I had learned loom knitting as a child, I made baby hats and sold them at garage sales whenever friends or relatives hosted one.

Gardening became another source of extra cash. I grew houseplants, started vegetable and flower seedlings, and sold them at local plant sales and yard sales.

The lesson was simple: if a skill can earn money, put it to work.

Later, I learned blogging and earned affiliate commissions by recommending products. I also designed greeting cards for print-on-demand marketplaces and promoted other creators’ products to earn commissions. I wasn’t focused on selling only my own work—I focused on creating multiple streams of income, even if someone else’s product sold better than mine.

While building these side businesses, I continued working a regular minimum-wage job to cover my daily living expenses.

As my income increased, I started investing through tax-advantaged accounts such as a Roth IRA. Over time, I directed most of my savings into stocks and bonds, eventually expanding into real estate once my investment income became more stable.

Keeping expenses low was just as important as increasing income.

Running several small businesses also helped me legally reduce taxes. Many business-related costs could be deducted when they were legitimate expenses. For example, if I traveled to buy inventory for my book business, some of those travel costs qualified as business expenses, provided I kept proper records and the trip had a genuine business purpose.

Another important habit was experimenting.

Whenever I had a new idea, I gave it about six months. If it showed potential, I continued. If it didn’t, I moved on without dwelling on it.

Life also taught me to stay flexible. During the pandemic, thrift stores closed, cutting off my supply of used books almost overnight. My affiliate income from wedding-related products also disappeared. Fortunately, by then I had diversified my income through investments, which helped me weather the changes.

The key is to remain adaptable while always looking for the next opportunity to earn, save, and invest.

It has taken me 17 years to reach this point, but the effort continues to pay off. At first, progress feels slow and almost invisible. Eventually, however, the systems you’ve built begin working together, and growing your wealth becomes much easier.

The journey to financial independence isn’t about getting rich quickly—it’s about consistently making smart decisions, creating multiple income streams, and allowing time to work in your favor.
