In earlier times, people lived and ate well even without money. Why did money become necessary?

Sharing came before there was money, they did not barter. Barter is a false myth told by economists — the people lived in webs of mutual debt. You want grain, I give it — you owe me.

Ledgers as we know it was memory, the village remembered.

Then came kings.

Temples, armies.

A king must feed his soldiers. Soldiers march to war. The men can’t carry the herd or hefty grain. The king stamps a coin. He gives it to the soldier.

But why would a farmer give his meat for a piece of metal? — Taxes.

The king demands a tax. He demands it only in his stamped coin. The farmer must now feed the soldier to get the coin. To pay the king. To keep his land.

Money wasn’t made to make trade easy.

What it did was measure the debt.

Fund war and enforce state power.

Before money, men just owed each other. After money, men owed the state.
