MARRIAGE IN SOUTH SUDAN MEANS 4 YEARS OF FREEDOM FOR BRIDE

The marriage traditions of the Dinka people place great importance on welcoming and honoring a new bride. Although the bride price can range from around 100 to 500 cattle, marriage is followed by a period in which the wife is given time to settle into her new family rather than immediately taking on household responsibilities.

For approximately four years—a custom known as “Anyuuc,” meaning Generous Welcoming—the new wife is not expected to cook, sweep, or handle the family’s daily domestic chores. Instead, this time allows her to adjust to her new environment, learn the traditions and values of her husband’s household, and build relationships with the family.

Throughout this period, many of the household duties, including cooking, fetching water, gathering firewood, washing dishes, and other routine tasks, are traditionally carried out by the husband’s sister or other family members.

At the end of the four-year period, the husband hosts a large celebration known as “Thaat,” or the cooking festival. During this ceremony, several cows and goats are traditionally slaughtered as part of the festivities, and the wife is formally welcomed into her role of preparing meals for the household.

According to the tradition described, if the husband fails to treat his wife well during those four years, she has the option to leave the marriage without being required to return the bride price that was paid.
