Shatta Wale has written an open letter to President John Mahama on how Ghana should tackle online abuse without silencing free speech.
The letter, dated September 28, responds to Mahama’s worries about TikTok and other platforms being used for misinformation and insults. The president spoke at a town hall with Ghanaians in New York on September 25 and called for a national conversation on regulating new media.
He says any new rules must protect freedom of expression under the 1992 Constitution. But he argues that freedom should not cover threats, harassment or knowingly false claims that cause harm.
The dancehall star wants Parliament, the courts, security agencies, the media and civil society to build a clear legal framework with proper due process. He also suggested that platforms identify accounts behind proven cases, but only through court orders, and floated jail terms of no more than one month.
Shatta Wale also warned against bringing back criminal libel, which Ghana repealed in 2001. He said his view is partly shaped by his own experience of unverified allegations and public ridicule.
He wants the creative industry involved early, and says the goal is to “restore responsibility to our public conversation.”
