A man will spend his 20s and 30s relentlessly exhausting himself to chase women and impress strangers. But around age 45, an internal switch flips—and he simply stops caring.
Swiss psychiatrist Carl Jung called this the transition into the “second half of life.” Jung observed that a man’s first 40 years are largely driven by biology and society: building a career, securing a mate, accumulating resources, and establishing a position in the social hierarchy. All of these demand external energy. But as men enter their mid-40s, this outward drive often gives way to a process Jung called individuation—a turning inward to discover what actually brings them meaning, independent of societal expectations.
By 45, most men have been running on the hedonic treadmill for decades. They have played the status games, bought the expensive cars, and chased romantic validation. Over time, they realize the dopamine hit from these achievements is fleeting. The effort required to constantly project an image of success or to court new women starts to look like a poor return on investment. They have seen behind the curtain of external validation and realized it doesn’t sustain them.
There is also a biological component to this calm. Starting around age 30, a man’s testosterone levels begin a gradual decline of about 1% per year. By 45, this hormonal shift subtly dials back the raw, competitive aggression that fuels status-seeking and mate-chasing in earlier decades. This allows men to step off the competitive battlefield and focus their energy elsewhere.
Men also begin to recognize time and energy as finite resources. A 25-year-old might spend his weekend at a loud venue trying to impress strangers because he feels he has unlimited time. A 45-year-old is keenly aware that his time is limited. He stops performing for people whose opinions do not matter to him. Instead, he redirects that energy into high-yield areas: deepening relationships with close friends and family, mastering quiet hobbies, or simply enjoying the peace of not having to prove himself to anyone.
