Sometimes, a few seconds are enough to notice a red flag.
Once, someone I knew saw me and said, “I can’t remember your name,” in front of another person. He could have simply said hello, but instead seemed to emphasize it in a way that diminished me.
I replied, “Don’t worry. I don’t even know who you are,” and walked away.
For me, the bigger lesson is to watch for patterns such as:
- Unnecessary devaluation — small comments or gestures meant to make others feel insignificant.
- Exaggerated self-importance — constantly posing, boasting, or demanding attention.
- Excessive friendliness — becoming overly interested, agreeable, or familiar too quickly.
None of these proves what someone is like on its own. What matters is the context, function, and excess.
Sometimes, the biggest red flags don’t come with a warning siren.
